Ohsweken (Six Nations) – Green Health for Six, the first public medical cannabis dispensary on Six Nations territory near Brantford, Ontario, has launched a survey about cannabis use. On December 4th, 2300 copies were mailed out to residents by post, with more being sought online.
“I’m trying to get people’s input to show that we have a want or a need in this community, to show that we are trying to consult the people and listen to the voice of the people,” says Green Health Dispensary owner, Jeff Hawk.
The Six Nations Cannabis Survey aims to turn the growing on-reserve conversation about the plant into practical information that better reflects the community will. It’s part of Green Health’s focus on accountability, ahead of Canada’s legalization of the plant scheduled for July 2018.
“It’s simple,” says dispensary staff, Aaron Sault. “We’re asking questions about cannabis use, how to regulate, and where people stand on cannabis as compatible with Indigenous medicine.”
The survey marks the second time in two months that Hawk has sought open consultation on the territory. Hawk says, “We feel that we have the right to self determination, the right to make our own rules and regulations and not fall under Ontario.”
Green Health for Six sees its role in providing cannabis as much bigger than a retail operation.
In a video documenting the release of the survey, Sault stated “Indigenous people have our own rules, our own system of governance and a way of doing things to help everybody. We have to empower that spirit within all our First Nations people. And cannabis has a way of connecting and bringing out that spirit.”
The survey runs until December 31st, giving on-reserve and off-reserve people time through the holidays to discuss the issues with family and friends, and make their opinions known.
